ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

This activity is designed for NSPS Level 2-4 hospital personnel working in frontline environments and those involved in identifying and managing patients with high-consequence infectious diseases (HCIDs). It provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach to Special Pathogen preparedness and response, equipping participants with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to ensure safe and effective patient care while protecting healthcare workers, facilities, and the public.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The accredited continuing education activity is designed for NSPS Level 2-4 hospital personnel who work in a frontline environment and/or are involved in the procedures to identify patients with a high-consequence infectious disease. Additional medical staff and public health professionals may also find the activity to be of benefit. Those individuals may include, but are not limited to, medical and/or nursing staff, nursing leadership, administration, education/training leadership, lab personnel, and infection control leadership. Staff specializing in emergency management, communications, specialized clinical areas, laboratory, facilities management, and environmental services are also welcome.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this activity, the participants should be better able to:

  • Define special pathogens and articulate their clinical, epidemiological, and operational impact within the context of frontline healthcare settings
  • Apply the “Identify, Isolate, Inform” (and initiate care) strategy as a framework for HCID patient management by effectively utilizing provided resources to accurately recognize potential HCID cases, implement appropriate isolation measures, and communicate critical information to the necessary stakeholders, as demonstrated through case-based exercises and practical application scenarios
  • Explain role-specific responsibilities for HCID patient management, including tasks and protocols for nursing, medical, laboratory, facilities management, emergency management, and environmental services staff through a case-based scenario
  • Leverage provided tip sheets and checklists to successfully complete simulated skills-based tasks, including waste management, spill response, and patient containment in practical application scenarios
